On October 20, 2011 Libyan head of state Muammar Gaddafi was shot dead by NATO-backed rebels. This came after a seven month long campaign of non-stop bombing and foreign military intervention to overthrow the Libyan government.  His death was presented to the world as a “victory” for the people of Libya. Under the official pretext of “protecting civilians”, NATO fighter jets carried out 26,000 air sorties, bombing approximately 6000 targets. Even the new NATO-installed Libyan government admitted that at least 30,000 people had been killed and 50,000 wounded during the first six months of the war.

Today, the capital city of Tripoli is rated as one of the worst 10 cities on the Economist magazine’s “Global Livability Report”, and a recently released statement by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says, “Libya is facing a deteriorating security situation and increasing acts of violence.”

2 years after the NATO overthrow of the Libyan government, join MAWO to discuss:

- What are the overall consequences of foreign intervention in Libya?
- What was Canada’s role in the NATO bombing campaign?
- How did the anti-war movement respond to the NATO bombing of Libya?
- What lessons can we apply to current foreign intervention in Syria, and imperialist threats against Iran?

Thomas Davies: Member of the Editorial Board of the Fire This Time Newspaper. He has written extensively on foreign imperialist intervention in the Middle East and North Africa, with a specific focus on Canada’s role in war and occupation.
