Join us for a panel discussion and dialogue to discuss the critical issues
surrounding migration, anti-immigrant legislation, ethics of cultural
production, and how Border Security is connected to these larger issues of
concern.
*** Given that Force Four was invited to participate but has sent their
regrets - we eagerly anticipate the presence of someone 'representing' the
company for them! Come on out and watch Sara Kendall, one of the cultural
producers behind the effort to cancel the show go head to head with "Force
Four".
For the first TEN people at the event, we also have a special
action-packed not-to-be-missed opportunity.***
- ZOOL SULEMAN: Zool is an Immigration Lawyer and Director of the MARU
Society, a non-profit organization which in part explores the intersection
of issues related to migration and race. He is representing several of the
men detained and deported in the immigration raid of March 2013.
- DIANA AVILES HERNANDEZ: Diana is an Indigenous woman and wife of one of
the men detained and deported in the raid of March 2013. She has been
actively speaking out against the raid as well as the TV show Border
Security.
- ISAAC OOMMEN: A graduate student of the School of Communication at SFU,
Isaac works as a communications coordinator, is a Vancouver Media Co-op’s
editor member, and is a freelance journalist.
- DAISY CHEN: Daisy is a member of Sanctuary Health, a health care
alliance formed in response to Bill C-31 and Interim Federal Health cuts
and advocating full access to health care for all refugee and migrant
communities. She is also a member of the No One Is Illegal collective and
Cancel Border Security Coalition.
- SOZAN SAVEHILAGHI: Sozan arrived to Canada as a Kurdish refugee at the
of nine. She is engaged in migrant justice, antiracist, and anticapitalist
activism, and is a collective member of No One Is Illegal on Coast Salish
territories.
- ALEJANDRA LOPEZ BRAVO: Alejandra was born and raised in Mexico City. As
a community organizer, she is involved with immigrant and refugee women
and youth through Illustrated Journey Youth Project, Community Asset
Mapping with Refugee Women, Fresh Voices from Long Journeys: Insight of
Immigrant and Refugee Youth.
The show Border Security has raised many questions from concerned
community members and groups, particularly because of its implication
within broader issues of racism, and anti-immigrant legislation. Following
an immigration raid on March 13th - in which Border Security filmed
without consent the arrests of at least 8 migrant workers - community
members have become increasingly concerned about the long-term serious
impacts of this commercial for-profit show that is approved and subsidized
by the Conservative government. For the last 3 months, a grassroots
coalition of community members has been taking action to urge Force Four
Entertainment, CBSA, Minister Vic Toews, and Shaw Media to cancel the TV
show Border Security, because of these long term effects, and how they
contribute to larger systemic issues.
We hope to provide a space for these issues to be discussed critically,
both to educate the public on recent policy changes and their effects, as
well as discuss how Border Security is implicated in these systems.
We have invited Force Four Entertainment, the show’s production company,
to join us in discussing these long-term impacts, including lack of full
and informed consent, violation of privacy, ethics of media production,
vulnerability of migrants, portrayal of immigrant and racialized
communities, and the connections to anti-immigrant legislation that CBSA
enforces.
