Mass Protests in Turkey - The Roots and Causes: How Should the Antiwar Movement Respond?

In
 late May, mass protests in Turkey began against plans to redevelop Gezi
 Park in Istanbul, which would see the park turned into a major 
commercial complex. The demands of the protesters quickly broadened from
 being against the redevelopment of Gezi Park, to anti-government 
protests against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's austerity program
 and ongoing suppression of democratic and human rights. Erdogan is an 
important ally of the U.S., and instrumental in the imperialist military
 intervention in Syria. The mass demonstrations have been met with 
brutal force from police including water cannons, tear gas and rubber 
bullets. Four people have been killed and thousands injured or arrested.
 Still today protests are continuing with daily mass demonstrations in 
more than 60 cities throughout Turkey. Meanwhile, various unions have 
held one day strikes throughout Turkey in support of demonstrations.
