On January 11th, 2013 France began a brutal assault against its former African colony of Mali by launching air strikes and beginning the deployment of troops. Their justification? “Fighting Terrorism”.  While the excuses and the violence being used are the same from Afghanistan to Iraq to Mali, the extension of imperialist war and occupation to Africa from the Middle East is a significant negative development, which already has had terrible consequences.

France has already deployed 1400 troops in Mali, and a UN Security Council Resolution has also authorized 3300 more international troops. Canada has been one of the first countries to get its hands dirty, sending a C-17 cargo plane and 40 military personnel to aid the French assault and promising to consider further actions.

At the same time, large and energetic rallies of indigenous nations in Canada and their allies have been taking place in every corner of Canada to protest the government’s appalling treatment of indigenous people and the denial of their human rights and self-determination. It is obvious that the government of Canada is waging a brutal war both at home and abroad. Peace loving people must oppose these injustices and have the responsibility and opportunity to join together to demand and end to imperialist war and occupation at home and abroad.
