A message from Mobilization Against War
& Occupation ~ MAWO on marking a new year of struggle for
humanity

2013 has begun, and what will this new
year hold? With the imperialist war drive against Syria and Iran
escalating, the destruction of Libya continuing, and the occupations
of Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine becoming more and more an obvious
tragedy for the people of these countries, the necessity of building
a united and effective antiwar movement is a critical task for the
coming year. Let’s unite to make this a year of struggle against
war and occupation, and a year of building a better world!

Start off 2013 with a contribution to Mobilization Against War and
Occupation’s antiwar organizing efforts. Contributions can be made
by PayPal using the link below, or you can mail cheques to PO Box
21607, Vancouver BC, V5L 5G3. Cheques can be made out to

2012 was one of the busiest years in
MAWO’s last nine years of organizing in response to events around
the world that demanded our attention. In this year, antiwar activity
has become a day to day task for MAWO. 2012 brought with it the
continuation of historical mass movements and uprisings throughout
the Middle East and North Africa, which are ongoing in Tunisia and
Egypt as well as in Bahrain, Yemen and Saudi Arabia against US-backed
regimes. 2012 also brought the imperialist response to the fact that
it’s position in the region is threatened by oppressed people who
have had enough of US regimes controlling and exploiting their
countries. That response being the increase of sanctions on Syria and
Iran, the heightened mainstreamed media campaign against these two
countries, the imperialist-fomented civil war in Syria and the
threats and preparation for potential military action against Syria.
Turning to Palestine, in November 2012 yet another war was launched
by Israel against Gaza, killing over 170 Palestinians in the
eight-day bombing campaign. This brutal and criminal campaign against
Palestinians will mark it’s 65th year in 2013.

Throughout a year that saw far too much
war and bloodshed, Mobilization Against War and Occupation responded
with consistent action and education. Over 12 months, MAWO planned
and organized 26 public forums, 11 rally and petition campaigns,
three picket actions, three antiwar cultural nights, one Hip Hop
Festival for Peace and one Film Festival for Peace which has been
moved to February 2013. Within these events, MAWO organized three
international days of action in Vancouver, in coordination with
antiwar groups in the US and around the world. MAWO also participated
in four international actions in the US, including the Chicago march
against the NATO summit in May, where MAWO co-chair Alison Bodine
spoke from the stage to over 15,000 protesters. Through all these
events and actions, thousands of MAWO’s antiwar newsletters,
leaflets and buttons were distributed, petitions signed, media
interviews and coverage aired and thousands of people brought
together to demand an end to war and occupation.

While the war abroad is being opposed
by antiwar efforts, here at home attacks on poor and working people
have been met with resistance and fight back. MAWO participated in
protests and rallies to support BC teachers on strike demanding money
for education not for war, as well as organized a public forum on
this issue. MAWO launched the Free Bradley Manning Campaign in
Vancouver, holding two pickets in front of the US Consulate and two
public forums to demand freedom for Bradley Manning, Wikileaks
whistle-blower and soldier of humanity. MAWO has included the demand
of Free Bradley Manning in MAWO’s monthly rally and petition
campaigns.

All of MAWO’s events are 100% free to
attend, despite the heavy logistical and promotional costs involved
in running an antiwar coalition. MAWO’s continued organizing would
not be possible without the contributions made by supporters. MAWO is
appealing to supporters to start off 2013 with a contribution to
MAWO’s organizing efforts against war and occupation.
