Join us for a special evening of poetry, live music and the
classic Cuban film, "Retrato de Teresa" ("Portrait of
Teresa"). The film tells the story of Teresa, who is overwhelmed by her
family, a job as a crew leader in a textile factory, and volunteer commitments
as cultural leader of her union. Her husband wants more of her attention, and
she is conflicted between her desire for domestic peace, her feelings of
responsibility towards the Revolution, and wanting to control her own life
beyond doing dirty dishes. This classic of Cuban cinematography is sure to
leave everyone with a smile on their face. Directed by Pastor Vega (1979). In
Spanish with English subtitles.

with all of the pennies you have in jars, cups and hidden under the couch at
home? Why not donate them to Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba? We
need your help fundraising to send volunteers on the 2013 Che Guevara Volunteer
Work Brigade to Cuba! Of course we always accept ALL donations in any form, but
due to the coming elimination of the penny we decided it was good time to
encourage our supporters to bring in their loose change and make a donation! We
will have a rolling station set up and look forward to receiving your pennies,
nickels, dimes, loonies and twoonies! A special Cuba prize pack will be awarded
to the person who brings the biggest change collection! The prize will be
awarded at the February 15th event, but we will be collecting loose change for
two months!

from past Brigadistas, as well as a chance to win some fantastic Cuban prizes
in a raffle draw!

WHO ARE THE 5 CUBAN HEROES?
 
Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero,
Fernando González
and René González, also known as the Cuban 5, are currently
serving
outrageously long sentences including even a double-life
sentence plus
fifteen years. They were wrongly accused and convicted in a
U.S.
Federal Court of “conspiracy to commit espionage” and other
fabricated
charges. The 5 were actually unarmed men involved in
monitoring
Miami-based terrorist organizations, which since 1959 have
been
responsible for the deaths of over 3,400 people in Cuba,
including one
resident of Canada, Fabio di Celmo, in 1997. Through their
important
work, these 5 men were able to prevent further deaths in
Cuba.
