On Wednesday, August 21, 2013 Wikileaks whistle-blower Chelsea Manning (formerly Bradley Manning) was unjustly sentenced to 35 years in prison by a military court. Before the trial even began Chelsea had already spent 3 years in prison, where she faced solitary confinement for nine months and torture. And what was her crime? Exposing U.S. war crimes committed in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world by releasing over 650,000 pages of documents, including videos to the website Wikileaks. While Chelsea Manning is going to jail for telling the truth, criminals who organize and order these crimes are free.

Crimes like the ones that Chelsea Manning exposed are continuing to be committed by the U.S. and other imperialist governments against people all over the world. These are the crimes of the past two years of death and destruction in Syria due to foreign intervention and attacks. Syria is being torn apart by foreign–backed mercenaries that receive funding, arms and training from the U.S. and NATO governments. 

In the new era of war and occupation the U.S. government and their allies will stop at nothing to take down independent governments, like the government of Syria. Their main purpose is to gain hegemony over all of North Africa and the Middle East. As peace-loving people and antiwar activists we must stand up against this imperialist war mongering that has now targeted Syria. We must also go out in the streets in for heroes like Chelsea Manning who have risked their lives in defense of humanity.
