Join Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC) to welcome distinguished
novelist and travel writer Rosa Jordan to Vancouver. Rosa, who lives in the
interior of BC, is coming to present her new book “The Woman She Was,” a novel
of love, revolution and history, set in today’s revolutionary Cuba.

>> About The Woman She Was:

The “Woman She Was” tells of 35-year-old Celia Cantú, a Cuban paediatrician
whose day-to-day life is unremarkable—or so it seems on the surface. She lives
in a somewhat rundown apartment in East Havana and is engaged to Luis Lago, a
high-level member of the Cuban government she has known since childhood. She
enjoys her work and adores Liliana, the 16-year-old niece she is raising. But
three things are about to shatter the serene surface of her life.

Celia begins to have hallucinations wherein, for a few seconds at a time, she
feels as if she is not herself but Celia Sánchez, the revolutionary heroine for
whom she was named. She considers these mental aberrations abnormal but
hesitates to seek psychiatric help. Instead, she decides to visit the historic
headquarters of the Cuban revolutionary army where Celia Sánchez lived (with
Fidel Castro) during the war. Celia Cantú reaches La Comandancia, high in the
Sierra Maestra mountains, where she has an encounter with a man that deepens her
doubts about her own sanity.

las Comunidades de Vancouver en Solidaridad con Cuba (VCSC, por sus siglas en
ingles) para acoger en Vancouver a la distinguida novelista y escritora de
viajes Rosa Jordan. Rosa, quien vive en el interior de Columbia Británica,
viene a presentar su nuevo libro “The Woman She Was”, una novela de amor,
revolución e historia, que se enmarca en la Cuba revolucionaria de hoy.

>>Acerca de “The Woman She Was:
La historia trata de Celia Cantú, una pediatra cubana de 35 años, cuya vida
diara es poco notable—o aso parece en la superficie. Vive en un apartamento
algo deteriorado en Habana del Este y está comprometida con Luis Lago, un
miembro de alto nivel del gobierno cubano a quien conoce desde su infancia.
Disfruta mucho de su trabajo y adora a Liliana, la sobrina de 16 años a quien
está criando. Pero tres cosas están a punto de destrozar la serena superficie
de su vida.

Celia comienza a tener alucinaciones en las que, por segundos, siente que no es
ella misma, sino Celia Sánchez, la heroína revolucionaria por quien sus padres
le dieron el nombre.  Considera que estas aberraciones mentales no son
normales, por lo que duda ante la posibilidad de buscar ayuda psiquiátrica. En
lugar de esto, decide visitar la histórica Comandancia del ejército
revolucionario cubano (Ejército Rebelde) donde Celia vivió (con Fidel Castro)
durante la Guerra. Celia Cantú llega a La comandancia, en lo alto de la Sierra Maestra,
donde tiene un encuentro con un hombre que aumenta aún más las dudas sobre su
propia cordura.
