On Friday, August 31 over ten
Transit Police and RCMP officers participated in the assault,
handcuffing, and forced removal of three peaceful Fire This Time
newspaper distributors from the Metrotown Skytrain station. All three
were released without charges later that night and visited hospital
emergency rooms with various injuries.

In response to this
assault, the Vancouver Committee to Defend Freedom of Expression was
formed and has grown into a diverse and active group organizing
consistent activities in defence of civil liberties and democratic
rights. Public support has been growing, and so has the Committee and
its activities!


Last Friday, October 12, the Vancouver
Committee to Defend Freedom of Expression organized a very successful
legal and political campaign fundraiser at the Mount Pleasant
Neighbourhood House. The event included a delicious dinner,
incredible performances by some of Vancouver's finest artists, and
raised important funds to continue building this growing campaign. 

Tonight we will meet to assess our recent fundraiser, as well
as analyze our overall work and strategize for future activities in
the campaign to defend Fire This Time and of all our civil liberties
and democratic rights. Please join us in this important fight!
