On the 8th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, NATO bombs began
dropping on the people of Libya. The new era of war and occupation had
expanded its vicious tentacles to North Africa. Another year has now
passed, characterized by further death and destruction at the hands of
the imperialist war machine, the continued occupations of Iraq and
Afghanistan and the most recent campaign against Syria.
During 9 years of war and occupation in Iraq, over $1.5 trillion has
been spent, and 1 million Iraqi's killed. Now the US and imperialist
forces claim that the occupation and war on Iraq are over. But, they
have no explained the presence of over 16,000 US troops and personnel
still in Iraq, operating out of the US Embassy in Baghdad, the largest
embassy in the world. Nor have they explained how US troops have been
replaced by over 5,000 private mercenaries under the control of the US
State Department and why US bases inside of Iraq are still active.
Now is the time that we as peace loving people in Canada must ask ourselves:
>> What is the balance sheet for imperialism in Iraq?
>> What have we learned from this tragedy that we can use in our ongoing fight?
>> How can we build a broader and more effective antiwar movement in Canada and around the world?
