Cuban spy wants temporary return home

The Associated Press
MIAMI -- A convicted Cuban spy still serving probation in the U.S.
wants to return home temporarily to visit a critically ill brother.
Rene Gonzalez is asking a Miami federal judge to allow him a two-week
visit to Cuba. Gonzalez's attorney says in court papers that his
53-year-old brother is in the final stages of lung cancer.
The attorney also says Gonzalez has fully complied with his probation
since his release from U.S. prison five months ago.
Gonzalez is one of the so-called "Cuban Five" convicted of spying on
Cuban exiles in South Florida and attempting to infiltrate military
installations and political campaigns. One of the five also was
convicted of murder conspiracy for the 1996 shootdown of "Brothers to
the Rescue" planes.
Gonzalez hopes to eventually return permanently to Cuba.

WHO ARE THE 5 CUBAN HEROES?

Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González
and René González, also known as the Cuban 5, are currently serving
outrageously long sentences including even a double-life sentence plus
fifteen years. They were wrongly accused and convicted in a U.S.
Federal Court of “conspiracy to commit espionage” and other fabricated
charges. The 5 were actually unarmed men involved in monitoring
Miami-based terrorist organizations, which since 1959 have been
responsible for the deaths of over 3,400 people in Cuba, including one
resident of Canada, Fabio di Celmo, in 1997. Through their important
work, these 5 men were able to prevent further deaths in Cuba.

Muy grave Roberto González, del equipo de abogados de los Cinco

Roberto González Sehwerert, del equipo legal de los Cinco cubanos
presos en Estados Unidos, se encuentra en estado muy grave en un
hospital de La Habana, después de una dura lucha contra el cáncer que
padece desde hace varios años.
Roberto es el único hermano de René González, uno de los Cinco cubanos
presos en Estados Unidos. Durante estos años, su propia condición de
abogado le ha convertido en un incansable luchador por la libertad de
los Cinco.
En octubre pasado, concedió una entrevista al diario Juventud Rebelde,
donde ofrece detalles de su familia y habla de sus convicciones, como
abogado y como cubano, a favor del regreso de nuestros compatriotas.
En sus palabras también estuvieron el deseo de volver a ver a su
hermano en Cuba:
“(René) habla de seguir trabajando. Le gustaría conversar con los
vecinos, o ponerse a «mecaniquear» un carro en la calle… Él tiene en
mente un proyecto agrícola, de autoabastecimiento. En eso anda. Y yo
pienso acompañarlo.”

QUIENES SON LOS 5 CUBANOS?
Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René
González son tambien conocidos como los 5 cubanos y estan actualmente
cumpliento injustamente largas sentencias incluyendo uno sentencia
doble de vida mas quince años. Ellos fueron acusados y sentenciados
por la Corte Federal de los Estados Unidos por “cometen espionaje” y
tambien por otros falsos cargos. Los 5 estaban desarmados y estaban
monitoreando organizaciones terroristas en Miami las cuales, desde
1950, han sido responsables por las muertes a más de 3,400 personas en
Cuba. Otra las victimas fue el Canadiense Fabio di Celmo en 1997.
Gracias a su heroico trabajo estos 5 hombres previnieron futura
muertes en Cuba.
