On Friday, August 31 over ten Transit Police and RCMP officers
participated in the assault, handcuffing, and forced removal of three
peaceful Fire This Time newspaper distributors from the Metrotown
Skytrain station. All three were released without charges later that
night and visited hospital emergency rooms with various injuries.

Since the assault, growing public outcry has led to the formation of
the Vancouver Committee to Defend Freedom of Expression. The committee
members include members of various political parties and
organizations, trade union members, as well as community members
outraged by the blatant attack on civil liberties and democratic
rights.

Thousands of people have also now read about the case in important
articles in the Vancouver Sun, The Province, and the Georgia Straight
print and online editions, as well as hearing interviews on many local
and national radio stations. The case has been covered by
international media around the world.

The BC Civil Liberties Association, Canada's oldest and most active
civil liberties group, has also taken up the case and written a letter
to Translink demanding an explanation for the assault:

The Vancouver Committee to Defend Freedom of Expression is organizing
a legal defense fundraiser on Saturday December 8, 6:30pm at the
Chilean Housing Coop 3390 School Ave. (Behind Safeway on Kingsway) to
raise much needed money for the upcoming actions and legal expenses in
the growing campaign to defend the Fire This Time newspaper’s right of
distribution and all of our civil liberties including freedom of
expression and freedom of assembly. Please join us in this important
fight!

El viernes, 31 de agosto más de 10 oficiales de la Policía de Tránsito y de la RCMP agredieron, esposaron y sacaron por la fuerza a tres distribuidores pacíficos del periódico Fire This Time en la estación Metrotown del Skytrain. Los tres fueron puestos en libertad esa misma noche sin que se presentaran cargos y visitaron salas de emergencia por lesiones diversas.

Desde el asalto las crecientes protestas públicas han dado lugar a la formación del Comité de Vancouver en Defensa de la Libertad de Expresión. El comité incluye a miembros de diversos partidos políticos y organizaciones, miembros de sindicatos, así como miembros de la comunidad indignados por el ataque flagrante contra las libertades civiles y los derechos democráticos.

Miles de personas han leído sobre el caso en importantes artículos en las ediciones impresas y en línea de los periódicos locales Vancouver Sun, The Province y Georgia Straighth, así como entrevistas en muchas estaciones de radio locales y nacionales. El caso ha sido cubierto por medios de comunicación internacionales en todo el mundo.
