On Friday October 7th, 2011, one of the 5 Cuban Heroes, René González, was released from prison. He was released not because the U.S. government has changed its’ cruel punishment against the Cuban 5 but simply because his prison term has expired. However, this marks the beginning of a new fight for justice for René. On September 16th, 2011 Miami Court Judge Joan Leonard upheld the courts decision that René would not be allowed to return to Cuba but must fulfill a 3 year probation period in Florida after his release from prison. This decision against the wishes of René, his family, supporters of the 5 around the world and the Cuban people, must be condemned. The U.S. government has also denied visitation rights to René’s wife banning her from U.S. territory claiming she is a threat to national security. The couple have not seen each other for 13 years. The Free the Cuban 5 Committee – Vancouver is calling on all peace loving people in

This months picket action is taking place during the 7th International Colloquium for the 5 Cuban Heroes and Against Terrorism taking place in Holguín, Cuba from November 16th-19th organized by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP). The colloquium will bring together people around the world to Cuba to discuss the global campaign for the freedom of the Cuban 5. The Free the Cuban 5 Committee-Vancouver sends a warm greeting to the conference and looks forward to learning of its certain success.

WHO ARE THE 5 CUBAN HEROES?

Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González, also known as the Cuban 5, are currently serving four life sentences and 75 years collectively in United States prisons. They were wrongly accused and convicted in U.S. federal court of “conspiracy to commit espionage” and other related charges. The Cuban 5 were not spies. They were involved in monitoring Miami-based terrorist organizations which since 1959 have been responsible for the deaths of over 3,400 people in Cuba, including one resident of Canada, Fabio di Celmo, in 1997. Through their important work, these 5 men were able to prevent further deaths in Cuba.

These 5 Cuban Heroes harmed no one and are in prison for giving information they had collected to the U.S. government about these groups, hoping that the U.S. would intervene and jail the terrorists.
However, instead of thanking the anti-terrorist Cuban 5, the U.S. Government put them in prison and in some cases is even denying them the right of family visitations, while the terrorist responsible for murdering 73 innocent passengers in the bombing of a Cuban airliner in 1976, Luis Posada Carriles, walks free in Miami.

El 7 de octubre del 2011, viernes, el primero de los 5 héroes cubanos, René González fue liberado de la cárcel. No va a ser liberado porque el gobierno de U.S cambio su castigo cruel contra los 5 cubanos pero simplemente porque su tiempo en la cárcel ha caducado. Sin embargo esto es una nueva pelea de justicia para René. El 16 de septiembre del 2011, el juez de la corte en Miami de los 5 cubanos, Joan Lenard, confirmo la decisión de la corte que René cumpliría un periodo de prueba por 3 anos después de su liberación de la cárcel en U.S. Esta decisión es en contra de los deseos de René, su familia, partidarios de los 5 de todo el mundo y la gente cubana, tienen que ser condenados. El gobierno de U.S también le ha negado los derechos de visita de su esposa quien tiene prohibición a entrar al territorio Americano porque reclaman que ella es una amenaza para la seguridad nacional. La pareja no se ha visto desde Agosto del 2000.

Este mes la protesta en accion se llevara acabo durante el VII Coloquio internacional por la liberación de los cinco héroes y contra el terrorismo en Holguìn. Este coloquio es organizado por el Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos (ICAP) del 16 al 17 the Noviembre. Esta convocatoria será una nueva oportunidad para que todas las personas amantes de la justicia unan voluntades y esfuerzos, en la lucha por la liberación de nuestros hermanos presos injustamente. El comite para la Liberacion de los Cinco Cubanos-Vancouver le envía un cordial saludo a el coloquio y se ve esperamos aprender de su éxito seguro.

¿QUIÉNES SON LOS 5 HEROES CUBANOS?

Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino, Fernando González y René González, también conocidos como los 5 Cubanos se encuentran actualmente cumpliendo cuatro cadenas perpetuas y setenta y cinco años colectivamente en las cárceles de los Estados Unidos. Ellos fueron acusados injustamente y condenados en un tribunal de los EE. UU. Por conspiración y espionaje, y otros cargos relacionados. Los 5 Cubanos no eran espías. Ellos estuvieron involucrados en el control de las organizaciones terroristas con base en Miami que desde 1959 han sido responsables por las muertes de más de 3,400 personas en Cuba, incluyendo a un residente de Canadá, Fabio di Celmo en 1997. Por su importante trabajo estos cinco hombres fueron capaces de prevenir muertes en Cuba.

Estos 5 Héroes Cubanos no dañaron a nadie y están en prisión por haber entregado información al gobierno de los EE.UU. acerca de lo que habían investigado respecto a esos grupos terroristas, esperando que el gobierno de los EE. UU. encarcelara a los verdaderos terroristas.
Sin embargo, en vez de agradecer a los 5 anti-terroristas cubanos, el gobierno de los EE.UU. los puso en prisión e incluso en algunos casos les niega el derecho a las visitas familiares, mientras que los terroristas responsables por el asesinato de setenta y tres personas inocentes en una aerolínea cubana en 1976, Luis Posada Carriles, se pasean libremente en Miami.
