Since the US led invasion of Afghanistan almost a decade ago, the Middle East has been dominated by a new era of war and occupation. Although these wars and occupations continue, right now the Middle East and North Africa is dominated by another force - that of the rising mass movements against US backed dictators, shaking the hold that imperialist forces have had in the region for decades. These mass movements are an advance on the side of the nations fighting for self determination, and for antiwar and peace loving people in the daily struggle against imperialist war and occupation.

Joining with their brothers and sisters across the Middle East and North Africa, the people in Afghanistan continue to fight day after day against the brutal occupation of their country. Afghanistan, in the 10th year of Canada/US/NATO occupation, is in an increasing crisis. Despite the claim by foreign forces that they want to end their mission in Afghanistan, in reality we are seeing civilian deaths increasing year after year and military withdrawal deadlines extended time and time again. From 2009 to 2010, civilian deaths increased by 15%, and in the first few months of 2011 there have been a string of civilian deaths from occupation forces air strikes. Recent attacks have taken the lives of Afghan children. On March 1st, 9 boys aged 12 and under were collecting firewood when they were killed by a NATO air attack in Kunar province. Another air strike on March 14th in Kunar province killed 2 boys, aged 11 and 17, who were working on their families farm.

Canada, the US and NATO last year extended their occupation end dates to 2014, but already there is talk of extending this deadline. During a visit to Afghanistan on Monday March 14th, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that the US and Afghan governments agreed on a US military involvement in Afghanistan beyond 2014.
