Canada Day: Colonialism at Home, Colonialism Abroad

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

TUESDAY June 28

7:00pm

Joe's Cafe [In Large North Hall]

1150 Commercial Dr. at William St.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This Friday July 1st will be Canada Day – But what is all of this
celebration for? What is the history of the foundation of Canada, and
the legacy of colonialism that continues today both at home and abroad?

The foundation of Canada goes hand in hand with the theft of Indigenous
land and resources, the genocide of Indigenous people through war and
disease

and cultural genocide. This continues today as Indigenous people face substandard living conditions and discrimination.

Abroad, for almost 10 years, Canadian troops have occupied Afghanistan
and denied the Afghan people of their right to self determination. In
Libya, Canadian fighter jets are continuing to bomb the Libyan people,
now for over three months. On Monday June 27, Canadian foreign minister
John Baird, in Sicily, signed a Canadian bomb destined for Libya with
the cryptic message: “Free Libya. Democracy.”

As “Canada Day” nears, join MAWO to discuss Canada's historic and continued colonialism, both at home and abroad.

Screening 45 minutes of documentary and news clips followed by speakers and discussion.
