On March 19th 2011, UN Resolution 1973 enforced a no-fly-zone over Libya – that resolution has been the basis for the US, Canada, the UK, France and their allies to indiscriminately bomb and destroy Libya in the name of ‘protecting civilians’ and ‘humanitarian intervention’. The NATO attacks have killed over 900 civilians, injured thousands, and destroyed substantial amounts of Libyan infrastructure. 

After already dropping at least 315 bombs across Libya over the past 3 months, the Stephen Harper government has stated its intention to extend its war drive in Libya for another 3 to 6 months. Next week, a motion will be put to the House of Commons for this extension.

Now the Western imperialists have set their sights on Syria, and have imposed sanctions on that independent country. The targeting of Libya and Syria comes on the heels of mass movements and uprisings across North Africa and the Middle East against US backed dictatorships. These began in Tunisia and Egypt where mass movements overthrew US client regime dictators, to ongoing protests in Yemen, Bahrain, Algeria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and beyond. In the face of rising anti-imperialist movements, the US and their imperialist allies’ have launched a counter attack, by militarily intervening in the independent countries in the region. Join us this Saturday to oppose the imperialist interventions and attacks in Libya and throughout North Africa and the Middle East.
