VanCuba’ Hip-Hop Delegation Travels to 7th Annual International Hip-Hop Symposium in Havana, Cuba!

This week organizers from Mobilization Against War and
Occupation (MAWO) and Vancouver hip-hop artists will be traveling to
Havana, Cuba to participate in the 7th Annual International Hip-Hop
Symposium, titled this year, “Hip-Hop for Peace.” This name is in
recognition of the Annual International Hip-Hop Festival for Peace
organized by MAWO in Vancouver, Canada for the past 6 years, and MAWO
has been asked to make an official presentation of the Festival as part
of this huge international symposium.

Organized by the Cuban
Agency of Rap under the auspices of the Cuban Institute of Music, the
International Hip-Hop Symposium has been held in Cuba since 2005 with
the participation of hundreds of artists from around the world, Cubans
from across the island, and has attracted prominent performers such as
K-Naan, Mos Def, Talib Kwali, and Dead-Prez to its stages. This year
artists from Haiti, Colombia,
France, Canada, and even the United States will be participating in
five days of forums, workshops, tutorials, and performances.

MAWO’s
Annual International Hip-Hop for Peace Festival will also be entering
its seventh consecutive year September 24th and 25th, and has grown into
an important community initiative which has brought thousands of people
together from across Canada and beyond by pairing exciting hip-hop
performances and tutorials with an inspiring message that a better world
without war and occupation is possible.

For the past two years,
Cuban hip-hop pioneers “Obsesion” have made the long journey from
Havana to Vancouver to blow minds with their uniquely Cuban musical
skills and positive messages. This has led to a growing bond between
organizers and artists in Havana and Vancouver, which will take another
step forward when the plane carrying the “VanCuba” delegation touches
down in Havana this Tuesday,
 August 16th.

Stay tuned for videos, photos, and a special report-back from this exciting initiative when the delegation returns, and check www.mawovancouver.org for information on this years Annual International Hip-Hop Festival for Peace!
