MAWO PUBLIC FORUM:
Revolution & Counter-Revolution in the Middle East and North Africa:
Building an Antiwar and Anti-occupation Movement in Canada and Beyond
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
TUESDAY April 19
7:00pm
Joe's Cafe [In Large North Hall]
1150 Commercial Dr. at William St.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
The last four months of rising protests and mass movements throughout the Middle East and North Africa have had a huge historical impact on our world, and have inspired people around the world as they saw both the Tunisian and Egyptian people rise up to topple their US backed dictators, and movements in Bahrain, Yemen and other countries fighting to do the same. However, as attention turned to the civil war in Libya, the antiwar movement around the world has been challenged to take a clear and unwavering position in favour of self determination for oppressed nations and against imperialist intervention in Libya. Imperialist forces like the US, Canada, NATO, the UK, France and Italy have a full scale propaganda campaign against the Libyan government to justify their current and escalating military intervention and bombing campaign against Libya. It is absolutely critical for the antiwar movement to carry a strong and united message against this new war against Libya.
In Vancouver we have seen a dangerous turn of an antiwar group catering toward a pro war message, when during the April 9th antiwar rally organized by stopwar.ca, pro war speakers were invited up to advocate the foreign military intervention in Libya. However, this political adventurism is not limited to Vancouver but it is a dangerous political position that has been developed in Canada, North America and around the world. Please read MAWO's Open Letter to Stopwar.ca and the Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA) regarding this issue (see link below), and join MAWO for this important forum to discuss how to build a antiwar and anti-occupation movement in Canada and beyond.
