After eight and a half years of war and occupation in Afghanistan, the Afghan people are still fighting for their self determination and for an end to the foreign occupation of their land. Last Tuesday May 18th, Colonel Geoff Parker became the 145th soldier to die in Afghanistan when a NATO convoy was bombed in Kabul. He was also the highest ranking Canadian soldier killed in the war. On Wednesday May 19th, Afghan resistance fighters launched an attack on the US-run Bagram Air Base. Not only is this a major military stronghold for the US, it also houses a jail infamous for the imprisonment and torture of Afghan people.
 
The escalation of the war is continuing as the 30,000 more troops pledged by Barack Obama in December are arriving in Afghanistan. In addition to this the occupying forces are planning a major new military offensive for Kandahar province in coming months. Here at home, more information is coming out about the Canadian military’s role in the torture of Afghan detainees. While protests in Afghanistan continue to mount against the occupation, here in Canada we must join together to demand an end to this brutal war and occupation in Afghanistan.
