On July 26th 1953, a 26-year-old Fidel Castro led a group of courageous young men and women to an attack on the Moncada Army Garrison in Santiago de Cuba, in an attempt to overthrow the U.S. backed Dictator Fulgencio Batista. Although the brave and honourable fighters failed, they formed the July 26th Movement and eventually turned July 26th into a victory with the triumph of the revolution on January 1st 1959. Today, across Cuba and around the world we celebrate July 26th as the beginning of the movement that paved the way for the Cuban Revolution and the great gains it has accomplished for humanity.
