MAWO Picket Action:
CANADA/US/NATO OUT OF AFGHANISTAN NOW!
*** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ***

THURSDAY October 1
4:00pm
620 Royal Avenue
New Westminster, BC
(near New Westminster Skytrain Station, beside Douglas College)

October 7th, 2009 will mark the eight anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and eight years of Canada/US/NATO occupation, air strikes, guns and bombs. In these eight years the occupation has devastated the country in every factor. Infrastructure is in shambles, less than a quarter of the country has access to clean drinking water, and employment is scarce. Health care is deplorable, resulting in the fact that one in five children die before their fifth birthday, and the maternal mortality rate is one women dying in childbirth every 30 minutes. In addition to all this are the direct attacks against Afghan people. The latest of many massacres was the September 4th NATO air strikes on oil tankers in Northern Afghanistan, which killed over 100 Afghan people, and caused horrific injuries and burns to many more.

For eight years the Afghan people have been suffering under this occupation, yet the imperialist forces of Canada, the US and NATO are still throwing more troops, weapons and taxpayer dollars into this bloody and criminal occupation. The Canadian military has squandered the lives of 131 Canadian soldiers that have been killed in this war. The government of Canada claimed during their last decision to extend their occupation in Afghanistan that they would withdraw from Afghanistan in 2011. However, on September 16th, during a visit to Washington, Prime Minister Steven Harper was quoted saying “Canada is not leaving Afghanistan; Canada will be transitioning from a predominantly military mission to a mission that will be a civilian humanitarian development mission after 2011.” Antiwar activists and peace loving people aren’t fooled ~ a government that has taken an active part in killing well over 40,000 Afghan people in the last eight years cannot suddenly become so called “humanitarian.”

The people of Afghanistan have been fighting for their right to self determination in these eight years of occupation, and as peace loving people, living in the country that is occupying them, must stand by the Afghan people in demanding an end to the occupation. Join MAWO’s 58th picket action to demand:

CANADA/US/NATO OUT OF AFGHANISTAN NOW!
SELF DETERMINATION FOR AFGHANISTAN NOW!
TROOPS OUT NOW!
