PUBLIC FORUM:
11 Years of Injustice: Why the Antiwar Movement Must
Defend the Cuban 5 - Political Prisoners Held in US Jails
WEDNESDAY September 9
6:30pm
Joe's Cafe ~ in the large North Hall
1150 Commercial Drive at William Street
On September 12th, 1998, five Cuban men were arrested in the US by the FBI, illegally held in solitary confinement for 17 months before being subjected to a kangaroo court trial in Miami, and sentenced to four life sentences and 75 years collectively. Today they are still in prison, as we approach the 11 year anniversary of their incarceration.
Who are these five men? The Cuban 5 were investigating anti-Cuban terrorist groups in Miami who are responsible for the deaths of over 3,400 Cubans in the last 50 years. They not only used the information they gained to defend Cuba from these attacks, they also handed over this information to the FBI. The FBI, instead of investigating the terrorist groups operating in the US, arrested these five men.
Former US President George Bush’s famous words “If you harbour terrorists, you are terrorists” show the hypocrisy of the US government, as 5 anti-terrorist fighters are in US jails, while the real terrorists walk free in Miami under the support and protection of the FBI and CIA. After 11 years of cruel imprisonment in US jails, these five men continue inspire the world, as they stand firmly by their belief in justice and humanity.
This forum will discuss more about who these 5 Cuban political prisoners are, how the US government attempt to keep their voices silent, and how the antiwar movement must join the fight to free the 5 Cuban heroes.
