PUBLIC FORUM:
War & Occupation in Afghanistan: Which Way Forward?
Featuring Guest speaker Paul Demetrick
WEDNESDAY October 21
6:30pm
Joe's Cafe ~ in the large North Hall
1150 Commercial Drive at William Street
October 7th 2009 marked the beginning of the ninth year of occupation in Afghanistan. The Canada/US/NATO initial claims of democracy, a better life for women and schools for children, have instead resulted in the devastation of a country. The recent shame elections in Afghanistan showed that only an illegitimate foreign military democracy is in place, while women are facing the second highest maternal mortality rate in the world, and children’s primary aim is surviving, not education.
In the coming weeks, the US government will make a decision on whether to go ahead with a troop surge that could see up to 40,000 more troops sent to Afghanistan. With all of the misery that the current occupation has brought to the people of Afghanistan, we can imagine how more troops will heighten the brutality of the occupation.
This forum will discuss the current situation of the occupation in Afghanistan, and the role of antiwar activists and peace loving people in organizing for an end to the war in Afghanistan. Speakers will include Paul Demetrick, a former army reservist who will be speaking for the first time in Vancouver against the war in Afghanistan.
