This week, the people of Afghanistan will be painfully reminded by the occupation forces that October marks the start of the 9th year of the illegal and inhuman war and destruction of their beloved country. Imperialist forces did not occupy Afghanistan to bring democracy, civil society and liberation of women, as they originally claimed. The US, NATO, the UK and Canada occupied Afghanistan and imposed a civil war on its population to gain control over its vast rich resources and its strategic location for further imperialist assault on other Asian and Middle Eastern nations.

The Government of Canada from the beginning has had its hands in this bloodshed. According to various UN agencies and other international organizations, Canada and other occupation forces have contributed to the increase in violence against women as well as the sharp increase of suicide among women. They have worsened daily life through the reduction of accessibility to clean water, the closure of the schools ~ including institutions of higher education ~ and the rampant spread of corruption, all of which are the results of occupation. They have developed only a phony nation-state which has more than a dozen different governments around Afghanistan, and the country has been reduced to a stand still.

We people living in Canada have a special human obligation to oppose and protest the killing of the innocent people of Afghanistan. Democracy and liberation can not be injected into a country or a population. It has to be built by local people through a participatory process.

Please join us on October 17 in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery to raise our voice of opposition to the government of Canada and all other imperialist war mongers in Afghanistan.
