In a time of world economic crisis, Cuba stands out as a country organizing and prioritizing people’s needs and building a better future for the Cuban people. For 50 years, human rights and human needs have been at the base of all economic planning and activity in Cuba. The Cuban system puts human needs before profit. This fundamental humanist policy has been practiced all along despite a 50 year long cruel and criminal blockade of Cuba by the United States. 

Today, within these difficult times of international financial and economic crisis, Cuba is confronted with the question of ‘what is the best way forward’? Many of the important programs of the Cuban revolution - education, healthcare, employment and environmental sustainability - are being discussed and reassessed in Cuba today to ensure that Cuba remains on its path toward maintaining quality of life as well as equality, justice and socialism. Join us for this important event featuring Jorge Soberón, the Cuban Consul General in Toronto and Wendy Holm, Professor of UBC’s International Field Studies in Sustainable Agriculture (Cuba), as they look at Cuba’s way forward.

En un momento de crisis económica mundial, Cuba se destaca como un país organizado y que da prioridad a las necesidades de las personas y la construcción de un futuro mejor para el pueblo cubano. Durante 50 años, los derechos humanos y las necesidades humanas han sido la base de toda la planificación y la actividad económica en Cuba. El sistema cubano pone las necesidades humanas antes de fines de lucro. Esta política humanista fundamental ha sido practicada a lo largo de 50 años a pesar de  el cruel y criminal bloqueo por los Estados Unidos. 

Hoy día, en estos tiempos difíciles de la crisis financiera y económica internacional, Cuba se pregunta "Cual es la mejor manera de avanzar"? Muchos de los programas importantes de la revolución cubana - educación, salud, empleo y conservacion del medio ambiente - se está discutiendo y reevaluando a la Cuba de hoy para asegurar que sigua en su camino hacia el mantenimiento de la calidad de vida así como la igualdad, la justicia y el socialismo. Únase a nosotros para este importante evento con Jorge Soberón, el Cónsul General de Cuba en Toronto y Wendy Holm, Catedrático de Derecho Internacional de la UBC estudios de campo en Agricultura Sostenible (Cuba), como ellos ven Cuba Hoy y que camino seguir.
