FIRE KENNEY! A community dialogue on immigrant worker raids and
citizenship changes


Please join No One Is Illegal and allies for an open community dialogue
and strategizing discussion focusing on: the recent Ontario immigrant
worker raids, Minister Jason Kenneys attacks on racialized immigrant
communities, the impact on Mexican (im)migrants of the Swine flu, and the
world economic crisis and its consequences for migrant workers in Canada.

** ONTARIO (IM)MIGRANT WORKER RAIDS:

In one of the largest CBSA raids in recent Canadian history, on April 2nd
and 3rd, CBSA raided three food processing factories in East Toronto,
Leamington, and Bradford, Ontario where they held some workers at gun
point. In an illegal and unprecedented move, 41 of the nearly 100 arrested
were tricked into signing waivers that removed their right to a hearing
and many have now been deported to Thailand and China. Many of the
remaining arrestees are currently being held in Immigration Detention
Centres.



*** WHAT MINISTER JASON KENNEY HAS BEEN UPTO:

In addition to the role that Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and
Multiculturalism Jason Kenney played in the deportations of workers in the
Ontario raids, he has also been overly active in promoting a racist and
anti-immigrant agenda. His recent comments and proposed changes are
fundamentally rooted in racist ideologies of defining who “belongs” and
who defines "Canadian values". Kenney is appealing to public fears and
prejudices of immigrants and refugees, particularly revolting in a context
where the Canadian government and Canadian corporations actively
participate in global displacement. As the Minister of Immigration, Kenney
also oversees the ongoing brutal detention and deportation regime of
Canada, coupled with a massive increase in migrant workers.

Over the past few months, Kenney has:

- stated that Canada needs to get tough on immigrants who do not speak the
official (read: colonial) languages of English and French and that
citizenship should be denied unless proficiency in those languages can be
demonstrated.

- recently appointed a failed Conservative candidate and known anti-gay
activist to the Immigration and Refugee Board.

- stated that the increase in the number of people seeking asylum in
Canada is indicative of "wide-scale and almost systematic abuse". The
reality, of course, is that the the increasing number of migrants around
the world is due to the effects of imperialist occupations and capitalist
exploitation.

- stated that Canada is not a 'hotel' and will not tolerate immigrants
isolating 'themselves' and not 'integrating' or embracing Canadian values.

- ordered an overhaul of the Canadian citizenship test and accompanying
educational material with the goal of "fostering greater integration of
immigrants" and a focus on "Canadian values." His major criticism is that
the booklet includes "two pages on recycling but not one single sentence
on Canadian military history."

- cut Canadian Arab Federation funding for immigrant language instruction,
alleging that CAF promotes “terror” and is “anti-Semitic” due to CAF’s
involvement in pro-Palestinian organizing especially during the most
recent Israeli assault on Gaza.

- barred well known UK MP George Galloway from entering Canada, deeming
him “inadmissible on national security grounds”. A minister’s spokesman
told reporters in the U.K that the Galloway is inadmissible on national
security grounds because of his views on Afghanistan and the presence of
Canadian troops there.



*** THE SWINE FLU:

Also known as the NAFTA Flu, the Swine Flu originated in Veracruz, Mexico
where the multinational corporation Smithfield Farms, with help of the
North American Free Trade Agreement, have set up gigantic and unethical
factory pig farms. As a result of the Swine Flu Outbreak, there has been a
rise in the xenophobic discourse from both politicians and the mainstream
media.

Justicia for Migrant Workers on April 29, 2009 issued a Press Release
expressing concern over the potential backlash that Guatemalan and Mexican
migrant workers may face as a result of the swine flu epidemic. J4MW also
expressed concerns that a double standard is being implemented through the
differential treatment of the thousands of migrant workers versus the tens
of thousands of Canadians who travel to and from Mexico annually. The
exclusive targeting of migrant workers constitutes the racial profiling of
specific communities.



*** MIGRANT WORKERS AND THE ECONOMIC CRISIS:

In this discussion, we will take a look at how undocumented and/or
non-status migrants are made even more vulnerable by the global economic
situation. The International Labor Organization predicts that
approximately 20 million people – primarily unskilled labour, migrant
workers, and women - could lose their jobs because of the global financial
crisis. With construction booms turned bust, hundreds of migrant workers
in Calgary and Vancouver have faced contract termination and deportation.
In December 2008, over 100 migrant farm workers were terminated by one
company, Ro-Land Farms, in Ontario. Meanwhile, the Canadian government
continues to focus on increasing precarious migrant labour programs while
decreasing permanent residency targets in order to ensure a vulnerable and
exploitable workforce.

*** Las redadas de los trabajadores migrantes en Ontario:

En una de las redadas de inmigración más grande de la historia canadiense,
el 2 y 3 de abril CBSA (la agencia de la frontera canadiense) asaltaron 3
plantas de procesamiento de alimentos en el lado este de Toronto,
Leamington y Bradford en Ontario donde detuvieron a algunos trabajadores.
En una movida imprevista e ilegal, 41 de los casi 100 que fueron
arrestados fueron engañados y hechos firmar documentos renunciando a su
derecho a tener una audiencia y varios han sido deportados a Tailandia y
China. Muchos de los emás están ahora en centros de detención de
inmigración.

*** Lo que el Ministro Kenney ha estado haciendo últimamente:

Por encima del papel jugado por el Ministro de ciudadanía, Inmigración y
Multiculturalismo Jason Kenney en las deportaciones de los trabajadores en
Ontario, el ha estado muy activo promoviendo el racismo y la agenda
anti-inmigrante.

Sus comentarios recientes y sus propuestas tienen como raíz ideologías
racistas sobre quien ‘pertenece’ al Canadá y quien define los ‘valores
canadienses’. Kenney esta apelando a los temores públicos y prejuicios
contra los inmigrantes y los refugiados, particularmente repugnante en el
contexto donde el gobierno de Canadá y las corporaciones canadienses
participan activamente en el desplazamiento global. Como ministro de
inmigración, Kenney también es responsable por el régimen brutal de
detenciones y deportaciones del Canadá, sumando también el aumento masivo
de trabajadores migrantes.

*** En los meses pasados Kenney ha:

- Dicho que el Canadá tiene que ser mas duro con los inmigrantes que no
hablan los idiomas (coloniales) oficiales, ingles y francés y que la
ciudadanía debe ser negada a los que no puedan demostrar competencia en
esos idiomas.

- Recientemente apunto a un fallido candidato conservador y bien conocido
activista anti-gay al tribunal de inmigración y refugiados.

- Dicho que el aumento del numero de personas buscando asilo en Canadá es
indicativo de un ‘abuso sistémico y común’. La realidad, por supuesto, es
que el aumento del numero de inmigrantes alrededor del mundo es debido a
los efectos de la ocupación imperialista y la explotación capitalista.

- Dicho que el Canadá no es un ‘hotel’ y no va a tolerar que los
inmigrantes se ‘aíslen’ y no se ‘integren’ o acepten los valores
canadienses.

- Ordenado cambios al examen de ciudadanía y materiales educativos con el
fin de ‘promover mas integración a los inmigrantes’ y enfoque en los
‘valores canadianese’. Su mayor criticismo es que los materiales de
estudios para el examen incluyen ‘2 paginas sobre el reciclaje pero no
solo una línea sobre la historia militar canadiense’

- Cortado los fondos de la Federación Árabe Canadiense para la instrucción
de idiomas para inmigrantes, alegando que la federación promueve el
‘terrorismo’ y es ‘anti-semita’ debido a la participación de la federación
en organizaciones pro-Palestinas sobre todo durante los más recientes
ataques israelitas en Gasa.

- Prohibido la entrada al Canadá del miembro del parlamento del reino
unido Jason Galloway, por considerarlo ‘inadmisible por razones de
seguridad nacional’. Un representate del ministro le dijo a los reporteros
en el reino unido que Galloway es inadmisible por razones de seguridad
nacional debido a sus opiniones sobre Afganistán y la presencia de las
tropas canadienses ahí.

*** La Gripe Porcina:

También conocida como la gripe NAFTA, la gripe porcina se origino en
Veracruz, México donde la corporación multinacional Smithfields Farms, con
la ayuda del tratado norteamericano de libre comercio, ha construido
platas de criá intensiva de cerdos. Como resultado de esta gripe ha habido
un aumento de xenofobia de políticos y en los medios de comunicación.

Justicia Para los Trabajadores Migrantes en el 29 de Abril del 2009 hizo
publico una nota de prensa expresando preocupación por la posible reacción
violenta contra los trabajadores migrantes de Guatemala y México. Justicia
también expreso preocupación sobre la doble moral que se implementa a
través del tratamiento diferente de los miles de trabajadores migrantes
versus las decenas de miles de canadienses que viajan a México cada ano.
El enfoque exclusivo en los trabajadores migrantes constituye la
discriminación racial de comunidades especificas.

*** Los trabajadores migrantes y la crisis económica:

En esta discusión, examinaremos como los inmigrantes indocumentados o sin
status son más vulnerables como resultado de la crisis económica. La
organización internacional laboral ha predicho que aproximadamente 20
millones de personas – sobre todo trabajadores no especializados,
trabajadores migrantes y las mujeres – podrían perder su trabajo por causa
de la crisis financiera. Con la decaída de los proyectos de construcción,
cientos de trabajadores migrantes en Calgary y Vancouver han perdido sus
contratos y han sido deportados. En Diciembre del 2008 mas de 100
trabajadores migrantes fueron despedidos por la granja Ro-Land en Ontario.
Mientras tanto, el gobierno canadiense continua promoviendo el crecimiento
de los programas de trabajadores temporales mientras disminuyen el numero
de residentes permanentes para mantener una fuerza de trabajo vulnerable y
explotada.
