MAWO Picket Action:
CANADA/US/NATO OUT OF AFGHANISTAN NOW!

THURSDAY July 23
4:00pm
620 Royal Avenue (near 6th Street, beside Douglas College)
City of New Westminster, BC
2009
has seen a major increase of foreign troops deployed in Afghanistan and
the results have seen more bloodshed and suffering. The month of July
has been one of the bloodiest for Afghans as well as for the foreign
occupiers as the death total for Canadian soldiers has already reached
five, for a total of 125 since the invasion began. In addition to this,
July has been the deadliest month for other foreign occupiers with a
record 31 US soldiers losing their lives, plus 15 UK soldiers who have
been killed. These numbers make July the deadliest month for the
foreign invaders of Afghanistan since the war and occupation began
nearly 8 years ago.
For Afghans, the brutality of war and
occupation is far worse. The United Nations Assistance Mission in
Afghanistan (UNAMA) estimates that from January to May of 2009 at least
800 Afghan civilians have been killed under the occupation, up 24% from
the same time period in 2008. On July 17th Canadian soldiers shot dead
an Afghan civilian in his vehicle along with injuring three others. The
next day German troops opened fire on a civilian vehicle in northern
Afghanistan killing two. And the response to all this killing is the
occupiers intend to send more troops to Afghanistan. BBC reports that
the plan is for the current level of troops to increase from 85,000 to
134,000 within two years.
This madness has to stop. Is it any
wonder that after nearly 8 years of this savage war and occupation the
people of Afghanistan are not lying down, and not accepting defeat from
this foreign occupation? A recent EKOS poll showed that at least 54% of
Canadians oppose the war in Afghanistan while only 34% still support
it. Antiwar and social justice activists in the United States and
Canada need to join together in unity and continuously mobilize,
protest, and resist this war drive on the Afghan people.
