The events of July 1983 are poignant for the entire Tamil population
around the world. Anti-Tamil pogroms carried out by Sinhala mobs,
sponsored by the Sri Lankan government, started on July 23, 1983...
Tamils were systematically targeted with violence in Colombo and many
other parts of Sri Lanka.
It is estimated over 3,000 Tamils murdered, over 150,000 Tamils made
homeless and tens of thousands of businesses owned by Tamils were
destroyed by the Sinhala mobs.
At a time when Sri Lankan Tamils were seeking refuge from the violence and
political persecution of Sri Lanka’s Anti-Tamil Pogrom of July 1983,
Canada opened its doors to provide a safe haven - we the Tamils are
internally thankful to Canada!
Please join the Tamils around the world and across Canada in commemoration
of Black July.
