CANADIANS REAFFIRM THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE CUBAN REVOLUTION

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 22 (acn) The Solidarity-with- Cuba National Association in Canada (CNC) has issued a declaration in support of the Cuban Revolution, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

In the text, entitled: “50 Years of Revolution! 50 Years of Dignity!” the CNC expresses “its warmest greetings and feelings of solidarity and friendship” to the people of Cuba on the occasion of the January 1, 1959 Anniversary.

The organization committed itself to strengthen its work to demand the release of Gerardo Hernandez, René Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero - internationally known as the Cuban Five -who are unjustly incarcerated in the United States since 1998, for preventing terrorist acts against Cuba.

It explains that friends of Cuba in the northernmost country of the American continent will carry out actions in 2009 to highlight the significance of the Cuban revolutionary process, which goes beyond its borders. 

The statement considers that the small country has made, during the past 50 years, “an invaluable contribution to the world struggle to achieve justice, social development and human dignity”, and stressed that “it has established an unprecedented legacy of internationalism and humanitarianism.” 

The text recalls that more than 2,000 Cubans gave their lives in Africa to defeat the racist regime of Apartheid, and that at present tens of thousands of technicians, doctors, and educators from the archipelago are struggling against diseases and illiteracy in different parts of the world. 

The CNC donated material and financial aid for the victims in Cuba of hurricanes Gustav, Ike and Paloma, which caused damages valued at some 10 billion dollars, the equivalent to one fifth of the archipelago’s Gross Domestic Product.
