The DTES Power to Women group is need of some cash-flow! The membership of
Power to Women is interested in securing as much non-corporate and
non-government funding as possible to ensure that our message and voice,
especially in the leadup to the Games, is not silenced or compromised.
Over the past few years, our group has emerged as a critical voice on
issues in the neighbourhood - such as violence against women, housing,
poverty, and police brutality - and we need to continue with our
individual and group empowerment, healing, and organizing efforts. But we
don't really just want your money; we'd like to invite you to our
fun-draiser to come have some fun with us, get to know us, find out what
we've been upto, share experiences and stories, and more!

* Hand made crafts including dream catchers, art work, posters, cards,
homemade goodies, clothes, furniture, books, accessories, and more on
sale!
* Evening of poetry, storytelling, and comedy!

If you are able to donate anything (books, artwork, crafts etc) please
email project at dewc.ca or call 604 681 8480 x 234.

"this group is like medicine for the soul, heart, and mind"
Please come support us!

---------------------------

The Power of Women Group is a group at the Downtown Eastside (DTES)
Women's Centre, located in the DTES of Vancouver (the poorest off-reserve
postal code in Canada).

We are a group of women (we are an inclusive group) from all walks of life
who are either on social assistance, working poor, or homeless; but we are
all living in extreme poverty. Our aim is to empower ourselves through our
experiences and to raise awareness from our own perspectives about the
social issues affecting the neighbourhood.

Many of us are single mothers or have had our children apprehended due to
poverty; most of us have chronic physical or mental health issues for
example HIV and Hepatitis C; many have drug or alcohol addictions; and a
majority have experienced and survived sexual violence and mental,
physical, spiritual, and emotional abuse. For indigenous women, we are
affected by a legacy of the effects of residential schools and a history
of colonization and racism.
