Thursday August 20 marked the second time in eight years of occupation that the farce of elections were held in Afghanistan. Throughout the election process there have been widespread accounts of fraud, ballot selling and stuffing, and a low voter turnout. The election results and figure of just how low voter turnout was isn’t even expected until mid September, a whole month after the elections! Besides all these factors, what really makes these elections illegitimate is that they took place under the barrel of a gun, with 65,000 foreign troops occupying Afghanistan. Democratic elections cannot occur while Afghanistan is occupied and their basic right to self determination is denied. 
 
The reality is that the people of Afghanistan’s main concern is not voting, it is how to survive and how to fight against the occupation forces that are killing them. Over 40,000 Afghan people have been killed in this brutal and unjust war, according to various media and independent sources. For Canadian soldiers that have become pawns in this war for profit, the death toll is 127. As this war approaches the eight year mark, recent polls show that the majority of people in both Canada and the US are opposed to the war in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile the US has opened a new front in their war mongering in Latin America, with their covert support for the right-wing military coup d’etat in Honduras. This Friday August 28th marks the two month anniversary of this bloody coup, which the people of Honduras are still heroically demonstrating and organizing against. In Vancouverand around the world, we must join in solidarity with the Honduran people to demand the return of their democratically elected President Zelaya.
