In recent weeks, the US-led campaign for attack on the people of Iran has continued to escalate. In his final address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, September 23, US President George W. Bush called on other countries to support a new round of UN sanctions against Iran, based on allegations that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. There are already three sets of UN sanctions, as well as US and European Union sanctions against the people of Iran. These are an attempt to paralyze Iran’s economy and weaken the people of Iran in preparation for attack.
In addition to these sanctions, which in themselves are already an act of war against Iranian people, the US has military bases in every country surrounding Iran, as well as a massive buildup of warships and military arsenal in the Persian Gulf. This is all in addition to the current brutal occupations of Iran’s neighbouring countries, Iraq and Afghanistan, where the US is trying to establish a military foothold for war against Iran.
In Canada, a federal election is approaching on October 14th. Canada’s war in Afghanistan is a question on the minds of majority of people as this election approaches. Nearly seven years of war have brought only death, destruction, tens of thousands of civilian casualties by the occupation forces including Canada, and the loss of all security and normal life in Afghanistan. A recent CBC poll showed that 56% of people in Canada disapprove of Canada’s war in Afghanistan. Yet none of the major political parties demand UNCONDITIONAL withdrawal of Canadian troop out of Afghanistan. None of these political parties truly represent the opinion of the majority of people in Canada against this war and occupation. Another question we must ask ourselves is: where is the position of these parties on the current attacks and threats of war against Iran?
Throughout the entire last session of parliament, the government of Canada remained silent on the question of attack on Iran. If the government of Canada was truly to represent the sentiment of the majority of people in Canada, they would oppose, rather than participate in, the current bloodshed in Afghanistan, and also the threats of an even more brutal war against the people of Iran.
The threat of attack on Iran by the US and its allies is too great for us to ignore. As we continue to demand an end to the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, we must also mobilize against attack on the people of Iran. On Saturday September 27, peace-loving people in Vancouver will join people across the globe opposing any attack on Iran. Also this is the last rally in Vancouver against the Canada/NATO war and occupation in Afghanistan before the October 14th federal election. Please join us this Saturday September 27th to tell the 5 major political parties that their silence and complicity on the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan and the pending war on Iran is not acceptable. We need a government that will oppose these wars and stop sending troops to unjustly kill and be killed abroad.
Join us this Saturday to add your voice to the demands:
No War on Iran!
No Sanctions on Iran!
Canada/NATO Out of Afghanistan!
US/UK Out of Iraq!
