People in Vancouver Condemn Recent Court Decision on the Cuban 5 and Unite to Protest the 10th Anniversary of Their Imprisonment

On June 4th, 2008 the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta released its decision to uphold the unjust convictions against the 5 anti-terrorist Cuban Heroes. The verdict of “Guilty” was upheld on all counts, from the minor charges to the outrageous charge of “conspiracy to commit murder”. 

On September 2nd, 2008 the June 4th decision to uphold the convictions was ratified along with the sentencing of 15 years in prison for Rene Gonzalez and two life sentences plus fifteen years for Gerardo Hernandez (two of the Cuban 5). The much-protested Miami court where the 5 were originally tried and convicted, and where there is a groundswell of anti-Cuba hysteria, will also be re-sentencing Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez. 

This latest decision by the Atlanta Court shows clearly that the US government and legal system will not grant the Cuban 5 a fair trial. The Free the Cuban 5 Committee-Vancouver is calling on all people seeking peace and justice around the world to join them to condemn this decision by the Atlanta Court and demand freedom for the 5 Heroes.

“September 12th, 2008 marks the 10th year of unjust imprisonment for the 5 Cuban Heroes. It has been designated as an International Day of Action. Events and actions around the world will demand an end to the injustice that the 5 Heroes have faced. In Vancouver we’re encouraging people and organizations to get involved in our events for September 12th.” stated Noah Fine, coordinator of the Free the Cuban 5 Committee-Vancouver. 

The Free the Cuban 5 Committee-Vancouver will be organizing two events on September 12th to protest this unjust anniversary. At 12pm in front of the U.S. Consulate, 1075 W. Pender St., supporters of the 5 will gather for a picket line to demand freedom for the 5 Heroes. Later that day a special Cuban cultural night will be held to honour the Cuban 5 which includes readings of original poetry that has been written by supporters of the 5 for the occasion of the 10th anniversary, from Vancouver all the way to Cuba. This evening begins at 7pm at the Mt. Pleasant Neighbourhood House (located at 800 E. Broadway). 

The U.S. government is using these 5 men as part of their longstanding and brutal campaign to undermine the human rights of the Cuban people, putting pressure on Cuba now more than ever. This campaign includes the US criminal and immoral blockade on Cuba as well as the US-sponsored terrorism of anti-Cuba groups in Miami who have killed more than 3400 people according to “Radio Habana Cuba”. The September 2nd decision means the U.S government is paving the way for more Miami-based terrorism and attacks against the Cuban people. As long as the Cuban 5 are in prison, the truth they uncovered will remain behind bars and the anti-Cuba Miami Mafia is free to operate and continue to attack Cuba with impunity. The U.S. government must end this aggression, jail the anti-Cuba terrorists operating within US borders and free these 5 men. 

This is a call-out to all who believe in peace and justice to gather together and condemn the latest decision of the Atlanta Court of Appeals against the 5 heroes. We must demand an end to the 10 years of injustice the 5 and their families have faced for their honorable task of non-violently fighting terrorism against the Cuban people.

El 4 de Junio, 2008, del Onceno Circuito Judicial de Atlanta hicieron público su decisión a mantener las convicciones injustas contra los cinco heroes anti-terroristas. El veredicto de “culpabilidad” fue mantenido en total, desde las acusaciones minores hasta la acusación escandaloso de “conspiración a cometer asesinato.”

El 2 de Septiembre, 2008, la decisión del 4 de Junio para mantener las convicciones fue ratificado junto con 
sentenciar René Gonzalez por un tiempo de 15 años y Gerardo Hernandez por dos condenas a perpetuidad, también con quince años. El juzgado muy protestado en Miami donde los cinco fueron procesados y condenados originalmente, y donde hay un clamor de histeria contra Cuba, será también el sito de condenación de los tres otros de los Cinco Heroes, Ramon Labaniño, Antonio Guerrero, y Fernando Gonzalez.

Esta ultima decisión por el jezgado en Atlanta presenta claramente que el gobierno y sistema judicial estadounidense no van a conceder un juicio imparcial a los Cinco Cubanos. El Comité por la Libertad de los Cinco Cubanos – Vancouver llama a toda la gente que busca la paz y la justicia sobre el mundo a juntar con ellos para condenar esta decisión por el juzgado de Atlanta y para demandar libertad por los Cinco Heroes.

“El 12 de Septiembre, 2008, marca el dócena año de encarcelamiento injusto de los 5 Heroes Cubanos/ Ha sido reconocido como un Día Internacional de Accion. Eventos y acciones sobre el mundo serán demandar un terminación de la injusticia que han enfrentado los Cinco Cubanos. En Vancouver animamos gente y organizaciones a involucrarse en los eventos por el doce de Septiembre,” dijó Noah Fine, coordinador del Comité por la Libertad de los Cinco Cubanos – Vancouver.

El Comité por la Libertad de los Cinco Cubanos – Vancouver será organizando dos eventos el 12 de Septiembre para protestar esta aniversario injusto. A las doce de la tarde en el frente del Consulado de los EE.UU, partidarios de los 5 serán juntos por una protesta para demandar libertad por los 5 Heroes. Más tarde a las 7pm será una noche especial de cultura, dedicado a los Cinco Cubanos. El noche incluye poesía original, escrito a los Cinco Cubanos por partidarios desde Vancouver hasta Cuba.

El gobierno EEUU usa estos 5 hombres como parte de su campaña brutal de largo para minar los derechos humanos del pueblo Cubano, poniendo presión contra Cuba más ahora que siempre. Esta campaña incluye el bloqueo criminal y inmoral por los EEUU contra Cuba, y el terrorismo de grupos anti-Cubanos, apoyado por el gobierno EEUU y culpable en los muertos que más que 3400 pueblos, según “Radio Habana Cuba”. La decisión del 2 de Septiembre significa que el gobierno EEUU está preparando para más terrorismo y atacas contra el pueblo Cubano. Mientras que los Cinco Héroes permanecen en prisiones con tal de que la verdad que revelaron será seguir entre rejas, y la Miami Mafia anti-Cubano está libre para operar y continuar sus atacas contra Cuba con impunidad. El gobierno EEUU debe terminar esta agresión, impresionar los terroristas anti-Cubanos que operan en las fronteras del EEUU, y liberar estos 5 hombres. 

Este anuncio es por todo que creen en la paz y la justicia, a juntar y condenar la decisión más reciente del juzgado de Atlanta contra los 5 Héroes. Debemos demandar una terminación a los diez años de injusticia contra los Cinco y sus familias, todo por la tarea honorable de luchando sin violencia contra el terrorismo anti-Cubano.
