>From Afghanistan, to Iraq, and now towards Iran, our world today is defined by
war and occupation. In the Middle East, imperialist countries like the US,
Canada and the UK, as well as NATO have focused their war drive in pursuit of
new markets and resources. This war abroad comes hand in hand with a war at
home, where poor and working people are feeling the brunt of social service cuts
and where Indigenous nations are still fighting for their land, rights and
self-determination.
Why does the US government consider 1.5 million Iraqi lives and the lives of
over 4,000 US soldiers a fair price to pay for holding onto their military
occupation of Iraq? Why is the government of Canada willing to spend $22 Billion
to maintain their illegal and brutal occupation of Afghanistan up to 2011? In
light of the current world wide stock market crash, it is clear that not only
does war bring misery and destruction for humanity, but it also cannot stave off
the banking financial crisis, economic collapse and coming worldwide recession
and stagnation that the capitalist economic system causes.
As antiwar activists and peace-loving people, it is essential that we discuss
how the new era of war and occupation is fuelled by rival imperialist economic
competition. This conference coincides with MAWO marking five years of antiwar
organizing on October 29. This conference is an important event for reflecting
on the analysis of the current global situation and the past five years of
educating, mobilizing and organizing against war, and looking toward the future
of building antiwar and anti-imperialist organizing.
