SATURDAY November 22nd
2:00pm
Vancouver Art Gallery
Robson Street at Howe Street
Downtown Vancouver, BC
The new era of war and occupation is causing misery and destruction for oppressed people worldwide. In Afghanistan, the most basic rights of self determination and the right to life are being denied by the brutal, unjust and illegal war carried out the US, Canada and NATO. In the last year alone, civilian deaths have increased by 39% (United Nations statistic). Under occupation, the people of Afghanistan have to fight just to survive in the face of airstrikes, checkpoint shootings and a lack of health care, sanitation and infrastructure, instead of being able to freely determine and develop their society.
The tragedy of war continues in Iraq. So far over 5 years of war have killed 1.5 million Iraqi people and at least 4200 US soldiers. Right now the US government and the puppet Iraqi government are finalizing the “Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).” This allows the US military to operate in Iraq for at least another 3 years, past their current UN mandate. We know the US record of killing in Iraq. How many more deaths will 3 years of occupation bring? Meanwhile in Gaza, Palestinian people are facing a blockade imposed by the Israeli government, which has cut off food supplies, medical aid and fuel. Just yesterday, November 20th, 70 truckloads of UN aid and food were blocked from entering Gaza, which at least 750,000 people rely on. This latest injustice comes on top of 60 years of occupation of Palestine by the Israeli apartheid regime.
At home in Canada and the US, poor and working people are facing more and more cuts to social services, education funding and health care. Just this year, $50 million was cut from post secondary education in BC, according to the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC. Why has $8.1 billion taxpayer dollars been spent so far by the government of Canada on the war in Afghanistan, when it is becoming increasingly difficult for young people in Canada to afford an education and when patients have to wait days and months to receive simple medical treatments?
This criminal and brutal war drive isn’t ending here. Already the US, European Union and United Nations Security Council have imposed sanctions on their next target of attack – Iran. From the outgoing US President Bush to the incoming Obama, an attack on Iran from the US is on the table.
Saturday’s rally for peace and against war and occupation is part of the program of actions for the 9th Student Week Against War and Occupation (SWAWO), from November 17 until November 28, 2008 in 10 Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island university, colleges and high schools campuses.
We must join in the struggle against this new era of war and occupation, in solidarity with our sisters and brothers under imperialist attack around the world. Join Mobilization Against War & Occupation and the Iranian Community Against War this Saturday to protest the current wars and the impending attack on Iran!
