For almost 7 years the Canada/NATO/US occupation of
Afghanistan has brutalized the lives of people in Afghanistan.
In addition to air raids and shootings at checkpoints, Afghan
people face escalating poverty, disease, unemployment, and
plunder of the wealth of their country. Just yesterday, four
Canadian occupation forces were injured, as well as an
innocent Afghan teenage boy was killed and two others were
injured. The Government of Canada calls this ongoing tragedy
‘liberating Afghanistan.’

What is Canada doing in Afghanistan? Following on the heels
of the Government of Canada’s March 13th 2008 decision to
extend Canada’s occupation to 2011, Prime Minister Steven
Harper and Defence Minister Peter MacKay recently released
an even farther reaching defence strategy. The “Canada First
Defence Stratagy” is putting $30 billion into a 20 year strategy,
the details of which remain hidden from the general public.
With this announcement, it is clear that we will not see the end
of Canada’s war drive in 2011, and it is up to all peace-loving,
poor and working people in Canada to organize against and
stop Canada’s war and occupation in Afghanistan. 

This public forum will aim to discuss what the Government of
Canada’s extension in Afghanistan and plans for military
buildup mean for people in Afghanistan, as well as for all of us
in Canada, and what we can do about it.
