Tom Hayden speaks on the struggle for a democratic society today
July 3rd, 2008 / SFU Harbour Centre, rm. 1008
UBC Students for a Democratic Society (SDS-UBC) is hosting Tom Hayden in
Vancouver on July 3rd, 2008. Hayden will speak on the student and civil
rights movement of the 60's and 70's, with additional remarks on the hopes
and problems of United States and North American society today.
Tom Hayden is the most well known 60's radical in America today, not least
because of his ongoing work as an organizer, California state senator and
legislator (1982–2000), and political commentator and critic. As a student,
Hayden was a founding member of Students for a Democratic Society and author
of its most important document, the *Port Huron Statement*. Following *Port
Huron* in 1962, the movement exploded across the United States and even into
Canada. After SDS, Hayden went on to be involved in legislative politics and
is currently the national co-director of No More Sweatshops! His recent
authored work is *Writings for a Democratic Society: The Tom Hayden Reader.*
Hayden's visit will help raise money for the legal fund of the 19 arrested
at UBC (see http://theknoll.sdsubc.ca/). Admission to the event is on a
sliding scale from $0 – 20. No one will be turned away. "Lessons from '68"
will be held at SFU Harbour Centre, rm. 1800., 515 W. Hastings, Vancouver
(Coast Salish Territory).
