On Thursday June 19th the Government of Canada released the details of the “Canada First Defence Strategy”, a 20 year plan for military build-up. The details were released with no advance notice and the previously quoted $35 billion budget has now jumped to $490 billion of taxpayers’ money. This will be going towards 20 years of increasing troop levels and buying more navy ships and military aircraft to be able to continue indiscriminate killings and the plunder of resources, as they are doing in Afghanistan. Canadian troops in Afghanistan fired over 4.7 million bullets just between April 2006 and December 2007, (according to Canada’s Defence Department). What kind of horrors is the government of Canada planning with a bigger military and more weapons?

The US is also making long term plans in an attempt to stay afloat in their quagmire in Iraq, as they are negotiating with the occupation-backed Iraqi government in order to establish a “legal basis for a long-term US military presence.” What is legal about the 1.2 million Iraqi people already killed in this vicious 5 year war? 

In the Gaza Strip this week, Israeli forces have again closed border crossings, and during a ceasefire with Gaza, deemed it acceptable to continue attacks on the West Bank, killing at least 2 Palestinians. 

Amidst the current wars and occupations, the US is setting the stage for its impending attack on Iran. After 3 sets of sanctions, a military build up in the Persian Gulf, and negotiations with other countries to join the campaign against Iran, the European Union has now announced sanctions against Iran on June 23rd.

As peace-loving, poor and working people, we must join together against this new era of war and occupation and demand:
