Welsh Hall (215 E. 17th Ave @ Main St)
On June 13th and 14th, 2008, Vancouver will play host to Canada’s first ever international conference on the ideas of renowned Latin American revolutionary and leader of the 1959 Cuban revolution, Che Guevara. The conference is titled “Che Guevara, Thinker and Fighter! Are His Ideas Relevant for the 21st Century?” Activists and intellectuals from around the world will discuss the importance of Che’s ideas today in a series of workshops and panel discussions hosted by Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba and the Free the Cuban 5 Committee-Vancouver.
Che Guevara is one of the most well-known and celebrated revolutionaries of the 20th century. Even forty years after his death, his ideas are influential in shaping the progressive changes happening all around the world and in Latin America today. The proof is the recent revolutionary developments in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua. The conference will explore the importance of Che’s ideas in the 21st century 40 years after his death, as well as exploring Che’s ideas on economy, humanity, volunteerism, and internationalism.
The conference will include presentations from a number of prominent speakers who have been active intellectually in Canada, the US, and the Middle East. Featured speakers include Dr. Isaac Saney, professor at Dalhousie University and author of “Cuba: A Revolution in Motion”, as well as Samira Amndan, Diplomatic Attaché at the Venezuelan Embassy in Toronto. The conference will also feature guest speakers Irma Gonzalez and Jairo Rodriguez, who are central leaders with Cuba’s youth organization, the Union of Young Communists (UJC). The UJC is the largest leading youth organization in Cuba, representing more than 600,000 members and reflecting immensely the ideas of Che Guevara. Other speakers will include Walter Lippmann, Editor in Chief of Cuba News, and Ali Yerevani, Political Editor of the Fire This Time Newspaper.
The conference will be held Friday June 13th and Saturday June 14th at the Welsh Hall (215 E. 17th Ave at Main St, Vancouver, Canada). Media interested in attending are encouraged to contact 778.882.5223 to arrange space.
