The year 2007 saw further destruction in the world as
a result of the current new era of war and occupation.
The ongoing occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan caused
more death and misery for the  people of those
countries, and the more military attacks and sanctions
against Sudan and Somalia as well as other countries
in  Africa reached new high levels in 2007. We have
seen an increase in the strangulation of Palestinians
in Gaza by Israel and imperialists. The world today is
witnessing the escalating military threats and all
other aggression including sanctions against Iran. As
this new era of war and occupation intensifies and
expands, 2008 will bring more pain, suffering, and
exploitation to the people of the world. The call for
self-determination for all oppressed nations is
becoming even more vital to the anti-war movement as
poor and working people under colonial war and
occupation are more than ever fighting for their
sovereignty.

MAWO’s first organizing meeting of 2008 involves
organizing a calendar of actions for the new year to
educate, organize and mobilize against this new era of
war and occupation. This includes continued organizing
against the Canada/NATO occupation of Afghanistan, the
US/UK occupation of Iraq, and building a dynamic
campaign against the US war drive against Iran. To do
this we will be continuing ongoing monthly, weekly and
daily anti-war actions like rallies, pickets, petition
drives, and other events throughout Vancouver, the
Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

The first action of the year that MAWO has already
begun is protesting Canada’s unjust and illegal war
and occupation of Afghanistan. Hence, we are
organizing our first picket action this year next week
demanding CANADA/NATO OUT OF AFGHANISTAN! In response
to the US military threat against people of Iran, MAWO
and the Iranian Community Against War (ICAW) have
issued a callout for a march and rally later this
month demanding an immediate end to the war drive and
sanctions imposed by the US government on the people
of Iran.

At the meeting we will be discussing and organizing
how to put these two anti-war actions together as well
as two forums and conferences we are planning to
organize in this month in the efforts to build a broad
and effective anti-war movement. Join us!
