~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since the early 1900’s, International Women’s Day has
been a day to celebrate the gains that our sisters
before us have fought for, and to continue this legacy
through the ongoing struggle for rights, equality and
justice of women around the world. As women from the
Middle East, to Africa, to Europe, to South America,
to here in North America know, we are on a long road
with many battles behind us and many ahead of us. This
is a day to recognize the all the marches, rallies,
pickets, strikes, demands and ideas of the past that
have put the women of today in a better position to
fight for a world in which our daughters of tomorrow
will live with dignity, respect, rights and equality.
In Vancouver, the International Women’s Day Committee
(IWD) has put forward the theme that has
characterized the struggle that women face globally
today. This is the crisis of war and poverty, which
historically and today targets women to suffer the
most. Where women face war and poverty, in place of
the struggle for women’s rights, women are forced to
struggle just to survive.
On March 8th, in Vancouver and around the world women
will unite against the injustice of war and poverty,
so that we can march for a better life for all women.
