IRAN
On August 8, 2008, the European Union enacted the imposition of a new set of United Nations Security Council sanctions against Iranian banks and financial institutions. This latest attempt to stifle Iran’s economy and strangle its people is part of an ongoing campaign of aggression by the US and its Western allies against the people of Iran. This campaign includes multiple sets of sanctions by the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations, as well as increasing threats of war by the US government against the Iranian people, such as the massive buildup of warships and military arsenal in the Persian Gulf and an ongoing campaign against Iran in the international media.

AFGHANISTAN
Meanwhile, Canada is continuing its brutal occupation of Afghanistan, which has terrorized the Afghan people with daily shootings, house raids, and NATO bombings. But Afghan people have continued to resist the foreign occupying forces. The last three months have been the deadliest for international troops in Afghanistan since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. On August 21, three Canadian soldiers were killed near Kandahar, Afghanistan. Last week saw the deaths of two more Canadian soldiers in the Panjwai district of Afghanistan, bringing the total Canadian troop fatalities for August to five - the deadliest month of 2008 for Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.

IRAQ
In Iraq, 13 years of UN sanctions killed over 1.5 million people and weakened the country before the 2003 US-led invasion and occupation. The last 5 years of US/UK occupation of Iraq has brought the death of 1.2 million people and daily shootings, house raids, and complete destruction of normal life for Iraqi people. With the latest sets of sanctions and preparations for war against Iran, the US and its allies are preparing to bring the same type of destruction to Iranian people.

This Saturday August 23, please join MAWO and ICAW for our monthly antiwar rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery. We will be joining peace-loving people in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world to demand “No to War and Occupation! Yes to Self-Determination!”

CULTURAL NIGHT
The rally will be followed by an “Iranian Cultural Night Against War”, featuring music, poetry, dance, spoken word, and cultural performances from throughout Iran.
