With the passing of the five year anniversary of the
US/UK War on Iraq last month, the continued war'
and occupation of the Iraqi people has seen no signs
of letting up. As of the fall of 2007, as many as 1.2
million Iraqis have been killed since the US invasion
in March 2003. According to Oxfam more than 43%
of Iraqis are now suffering from absolute poverty.

The war on Iraq is met with equal brutality in
Canada/NATO’s war on Afghanistan. In fact the air
strikes in Afghanistan in 2007 were over 2,764 and
at the same time period there were 1,140 air strikes
in Iraq. Despite this, on Tuesday, April 22, US
Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, demanded that the
Air Force assaults on Iraq and Afghanistan are not
sufficient enough. With this open call for more
violence and brutality against the Afghan people,
coupled with the recent decision in the parliament of
Canada to extend their occupation of Afghanistan
until 2011 for now, there are no signs of ending the
war and aggression against the people of Afghanistan.
The occupation of Afghanistan has been going on for
almost 7 years now, and with occupying forces and
generals admitting that the war in Afghanistan is only
getting worse, and their only solution is increased
attacks, what more will an extension to 2011 bring
other than more suffering and destruction for
Afghanistan? We must join our brothers and sisters in
Iraq and Afghanistan and majority of people in
Canada who are demanding an end to the occupations,
and come to the streets of Vancouver calling for an
immediate end to these unjust, illegal and inhuman
wars and occupations!
