Public Forum: What Does the Extension of Canada’s
Occupation Mean for Afghanistan?

FRIDAY April 18th
6:30pm
Britannia Community Center (Learning Resource Room)
1661 Napier St. at Commercial Dr.
On March 13th, a vote in Canada’s parliament passed to
extend Canada’s occupation of Afghanistan from 2009 to
2011. This decision was made with absolutely no
consultation of working people in Canada, much less
with people in Afghanistan. Just in 2007, Afghan
people faced 2,764 air strikes (USA Today) and as
Canada is escalating their war machine, this extension
comes with even more helicopters to launch air strikes
that will add more deaths to the 10’s of 1000’s that
there isn’t even an official count of. On top of these
direct killings, the overall living standards are
decreasing on all levels. 1 in 9 women are now dying
in childbirth, the second highest rate in the world,
as there isn’t adequate medical care under the
occupation. Poverty is deplorable as according to
UNICEF there are 60,000 street children in Kabul
alone. Ironically, the only statistic that is rising
is heroin production, which has skyrocketed under
military occupation and the puppet Karzai government.
Participate in this public forum to discuss how this
extension impacts people in Afghanistan, and what the
antiwar movement can do to oppose it.
