OVER 1,000 PETITIONS SIGNED DEMANDING:
DROP ALL CHARGES AGAINST ALISON BODINE NOW!
ALISON BODINE DEFENCE COMMITTEE TO UNVEIL SIGNATURES AT TODAYS PRESS CONFERENCE
September 26 In just one week, the Alison Bodine
Defence Committee (ABDC) has collected over 1,000
petition signatures. The petition demands that the
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) drop all charges
against US anti-war activist Alison Bodine. Bodine was
targeted as an anti-war and social justice activist
and arrested by the CBSA on Thursday, September 13th.
The petition signatures are just one part of how much
support the demand for her release has received from
people in Canada and across the world, said Bodine.
We have received letters of support from NDP MPs
Libby Davies and Bill Siksay; from the 45,000-member
Hospital Employees Union; from Iglesia San Romero de
las Americas church in New York City; and from
concerned organizations and individuals locally and
internationally.
The petition signatures were gathered from supporters
on the streets of Vancouver and particularly from
college and university campuses across the Lower
Mainland and Vancouver Island. The ABDC has held a
number of petition drives during the Alison Bodine
Speaks Out campus speaking tour. The tour has held
successful events at Simon Fraser University, the
University of British Columbia and the University of
Victoria. Today and tomorrow, Bodine will be speaking
to students at Capilano College and Langara College.
The campus speaking tour has seen hundreds of students
come out to learn more about the case and to support
the demand that all charges against her be dropped,
said Bodine. Students at all campuses have come out
with the understanding that my arrest is really an
attack on the right of students to organize and
express their political opinions and furthermore
that it is an attack on the democratic and human
rights of all people, particularly social justice
organizers and those without residency or status in
Canada.
Public pressure on the CBSA to drop all charges
against Bodine is increasing as the Friday, September
28th hearing approaches. The ABDC will be continuing
rallies in front of the Citizenship & Immigration
Canada offices this week. Today, the committee will
unveil the petition signatures collected at a rally
and press conference in front of the CIC offices at
10:00am.
