WEDNESDAY October 17th

Alison Bodine, Co-Chair and a spokesperson of Mobilization Against War and Occupation, was recently targeted as an antiwar activist and arrested by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), after her antiwar materials were searched and held at the border. Her case is one of many as US and Canadian war resisters also face increasing persecution for refusing to fight the criminal Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and more and more antiwar and social justice activists must defend their human and democratic rights to organize, protest and mobilize against war and occupation. Several similar cases have risen in the past few weeks. The recent actions of the CBSA in denying entry to Canada to two prominent US antiwar activists, Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK Women for Peace and Ann Wright, retired U.S. army colonel and former diplomat who quit in opposition to the Iraq war, are a further attack on the democratic rights of free speech and right to organize.
To add to these recent occurrences on October 16th, Imam Saïd Jaziri, a Tunisian refugee living in Montreal, was arrested by the CBSA and is now threatened with deportation back to his home country where he could face torture and attack. Imam Jaziri is an outspoken Muslim community organizer who led a large protest in 2006 against the Danish media publication of racist, insulting cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
In all of these cases it is clear that the Government of Canada and the CBSA are targeting people who are organizing and mobilizing against war and occupation at home and abroad. Join us to analyze and discuss in depth these continuing attacks in the context of the current era of war and occupation, and how the antiwar movement must respond and move forward!
