URGENT SUPPORT FOR LAIBAR SINGH
LAIBAR RECEIVES DEPORTATION ORDER FOR INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
RALLY SUNDAY DECEMBER 2ND
2 PM AT CITIZENSHIP OFFICE IN SURREY
13450 102nd Avenue Surrey (between 134th and 135th Street), 1 block from
Surrey Central Skytrain Station
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) has informed Mr. Laibar
Singh that he will be deported on Monday December 10th- ironically
International Human Rights Day- after refusing his humanitarian and
compassionate claim. It is outrageous that the Canadian government
continues to push for the deportation of a paralyzed man who has received
an unbelievable amount of support from the community and people all across
Canada.

The struggle of Laibar Singh points to the systemic flaws and barriers of
a fundamentally unjust system, from which victories can only be won by
public struggle. The struggle against deportation and to support Laibar is
not for him alone nor is it simply one case, rather it symbolizes the
struggles and aspirations of his community and is part of a campaign for
all immigrant and refugees who daily struggle to live with dignity. His
situation reveals how hard and long racialized migrants must fight to
assert their right to self-determination which the Canadian government
consistently denies and instead perpetuates pain, anxiety, and violence
through detentions and deportations.

We realize that this is short notice and also that there is much else
planned this coming weekend, however if you are able to, we strongly
encourage you to join the rally on Sunday, as well as take 5 minutes to
pressure Immigration Minister Finlay.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION TODAY TO PRESSURE IMMIGRATION MINISTER FINLAY!

*** We realize that most of you are probably flooded by letter-writing
campaigns or find letter-writing futile. However, in this situation, it is
imperative to pressure the Immigration Minister, particularly as there is
a counter-campaign that is demanding Mr. Laibar Singh's deportation.

Also, to date, it is clear that the government has been forced to respond
to an unparalled amount of support and pressure and it is time that they
get the message and grant Mr. Laibar Singh a stay on his deportation
order.

IMMIGRATION MINISTER DIANE FINLAY
* CALL (PREFERABLE): (613) 996-4974
* FAX: (613) 996-9749
* EMAIL: minister at cic.gc.ca and Finley.D at parl.gc.ca

MINISTER STOCKWELL DAY (RESPONSIBLE FOR CBSA)
* CALL: 613.995.1702 or 250.770.4480
* FAX: 613.995.1154 or 250.770.4484
* EMAIL: day.s at parl.gc.ca or days1 at parl.gc.ca

MYTHS AND REALITIES IN MR. SINGH’S CASE: KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE YOU MAKE UP
YOUR MIND!

* Mr. Laibar Singh was never handed down a deportation order prior to the
one he received in July 2007. He has, therefore, never been "illegal" in
Canada before taking sanctuary. Everyone in sanctuary has overstayed a
deportation order, not just Singh.
* Mr. Laibar Singh arrived on a fake document, which he declared to
Canadian immigration authorities. This is not illegal as international and
Canadian refugee law recognizes the reality that many asylum seekers will
be forced to travel on fake documents.
* Mr. Laibar Singh has not exhausted all his legal avenues. He has a
pending Humanitarian and Compassionate review.
* Mr. Laibar Singh's refusal as a refugee claimant must be understood in
the context of a climate where an increasing number of sanctuary cases --
currently at least 10 sanctuary cases across Canada -- represent a growing
movement of faith communities that are witnessing and responding to the
structural flaws in the immigration and refugee system.

No One is Illegal-Vancouver is a grassroots anti-colonial
immigrant/refugee rights community collective with leadership from members
of migrant and/or racialized backgrounds. As a movement for
self-determination that challenges the ideology of immigration controls,
we are in full confrontation with Canadian border policies; denouncing and
taking action to combat racial profiling, detention and deportation, the
national security apparatus, law enforcement brutality, and exploitative
working conditions of migrants.

We struggle for the right for our communities to maintain their
livelihoods and resist war, occupation, and displacement; while supporting
indigenous sisters and brothers fighting theft of land and colonization.
We also place ourselves within the broader movement for global social
justice that struggles against capitalism, militarism, oppression,
poverty, imperialism, and other systems of domination and exploitation.
