On April 29th-30th 2007, in Havana, Cuba, 420 youth and students from
43 different countries gathered to participate in the 1st International
Youth Summit in solidarity with the 5 Cuban Heroes Held in U.S. Jails.
Delegates from Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, North America and
Latin America joined the meeting demanding that the U.S. government the
release the Cuban 5 who have been imprisoned since 1998 for exposing
U.S. government sponsored terrorism against Cuba.  Please join us as
three Vancouver organizers and activists return with stories of their
exciting trip to revolutionary Cuba, and of the dynamic youth summit
with the message to Free the Cuban 5 NOW!

* WHO ARE THE CUBAN 5? *
Since Cuba asserted its right to independence in 1959, the United
States has been putting pressure on Cuba to return to U.S. economic and
political control. The Bay of Pigs invasion, the U.S. blockade on Cuba,
and many other actions, show the threats and intimidation used by the
U.S. against Cuba. However, we rarely hear about the U.S. government's
support for Miami-based anti-Cuban terrorist organizations. Atrocities
committed by these groups include: the bombing of hotels in Cuba,
assassinations, and the bombing of a Cuban airliner, in 1976 which took
the lives of 73 people. 

Between 1994 and 1995, Cuba sent five men, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón
Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González on a
mission to collect information and expose these groups. In 1998, after
gathering evidence to expose the terrorists, Cuba released the
information to the FBI. Immediately following this, the U.S. government
arrested the Cuban 5. 

In 2001 these men were convicted, after a seven-month trial full of
fabricated evidence, the Cuban 5 were sentenced to between 15 years and
double life. These five heroes never harmed anyone, and were only
trying to prevent terrorism against their country. Their imprisonment
is a gross miscarriage of justice, especially in a country which claims
to be leading the "war on terror". Join us in the battle to free the 5
Cuban Heroes held in U.S. Jails!

Del 29 al 30 de Abril, en La Habana, Cuba, 420 jóvenes y
estudiantes de 43 diferentes países, se reunieron para
participar en el Primer Encuentro Juvenil Internacional por la
Liberación de los Cinco Héroes Presos en los Estados Unidos.
Delegados de Europa, África, Asia, el Medio Oriente,
Norteamérica y América Latina participaron en el encuentro bajo la
demanda de que el gobierno de los EE.UU. libere a los Cinco Héroes,
quienes han sido encarcelados desde 1998 por haber expuesto el
terrorismo anticubano apoyado por los EE.UU. Venga a escuchar a tres
organizadores de Vancouver contar historias de su viaje emocionante a
Cuba revolucionaria, y del encuentro juvenil dinámico que
llevaba el mensaje de ¡Liberen a los Cinco, YA!

*¿Quiénes son los Cinco Cubanos? *
Desde que Cuba asumió un camino independiente en 1959, los
Estados Unidos han presionado a Cuba a que vuelva al control
político Estadounidense. La invasión de Playa
Girón, el bloqueo de los EE.UU. en contra de Cuba, y muchas
otras acciones, demuestran las amenazas e intimidaciones utilizadas por
los EE.UU. en contra de Cuba. Sin embargo, no oímos mucho sobre
el apoyo que el gobierno estadounidense da a organizaciones terroristas
anticubanas que operan desde Miami. Las atrocidades cometidas por estos
grupos incluyen: explosiones en hoteles en Cuba, asesinatos, y hacer
explotar un avión Cubano en 1976, que mato a 73 personas.

Entre 1994 y 1995, Cuba mando a cinco hombres, Gerardo
Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero,
Fernando González y Rene González en una misión
para recolectar información y exponer a estos grupos. En 1998,
después de haber reunido evidencia para exponer a estos terroristas,
Cuba le dio esta información al FBI. Inmediatamente después el
gobierno de los EE.UU. arresto a los Cinco Cubanos.

En 2001 estos hombres fueron procesados, después de un juicio de siete
meses lleno de evidencia falsa, los Cinco Héroes fueron sentenciados a
términos de entre 15 años hasta doble cadena perpetua. Estos
cinco hombres nunca dañaron a nadie, solamente intentaban
detener actos de terrorismo en contra de su país. Su
encarcelamiento es un gravamen a la justicia, especialmente en un
país que dice librar un “guerra contra el terror”.
