Background info on the blockade... /
Información histórica sobre el bloqueo

-----------------------------------

What is the US blockade on Cuba?
48 years ago the Cuban Revolution overthrew
a corrupt US backed dictatorship and started building a society based
on meeting the needs of the workers and peasant farmers of Cuba. The
Cuban government took back the land and resources of Cuba from big
businesses and corporations and put them into the hands of the people
of Cuba. Cuba has fought for real human rights, free and universal
healthcare and education, democracy and environment. Ever since, the
government of the United States has done everything it possibly could
to overthrow the revolution and turn the country back into a US
neo-colony. For 46 years the main strategy of the government of the
U.S. has been an economic blockade of Cuba; an attempt to starve and
grind down the Cuban people. The Cuban nation has paid a high cost, but
the strategy has failed and the Cuban revolution continues to advance.
Today Cuba is a leader in the world, with the lowest infant mortality
rate and illiteracy levels in Latin America and more doctors per person
than even the U.S.

How does the blockade work? What will the last 2 years of George W
Bush’s presidency mean for the blockade? Will the policy change under
the next US president? How will the Cuban government and society change
after President Fidel Castro’s retirement or death? What can people in
Canada do to help bring the blockade to an end? Join us for the events
to discuss these questions & more!

-----------------------------------
