Happening Now: 24Hr Vigil for the Cuban 5 Continues!

August 20th - With just over 16 hours of consistent presence outside
the U.S. Consulate demanding freedom for our Five Cuban Heroes held in
U.S. jails, the Free the Cuban 5 Committee-Vancouver and Vancouver
Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC) plan to stay for another 8
hours to make their voices heard on this important day.  

With over 70 people coming and going from the U.S. Consulate throughout
the afternoon and night the support and solidarity of many has been
shown for these Five Cuban Heroes. Supporters have been singing songs
for the Five, handing out information to passers-by, listening to
speakers, reading poetry by the Five, signing letters and cards for the
Five and keeping their spirits high into the late night and early
morning.  

Today, on Monday August 20th, the Cuban 5 will face a new battle in
their struggle for justice as they begin their next round of appeals
hearings in Atlanta. For almost nine years, these 5 heroes - Antonio
Guerrero, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez and Gerardo
Hernandez - have been held in U.S. prisons for defending humanity and
the people of Cuba against U.S.-sponsored terrorism. 

We are calling on all those concerned for Social Justice to come and
denounce the unjust imprisonment of the Five Cuban Heroes today at the
United States Consulate (1075 W. Pender in downtown Vancouver) these
Five men need your solidarity and strength today while they argue
against their unjust imprisonment in the courts in Atlanta. Please join
us at anytime between now and 3pm but especially for the picket action
from Noon-1pm where we will make our voices louder for everyone in the
U.S. consulate to hear!

On Monday, August 20, the Cuban 5 will face a new battle in their 
struggle for justice as they begin their next round of appeals 
hearings in Atlanta. For almost nine years, these 5 men - Antonio 
Guerrero, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez and 
Gerardo Hernandez - have been held in U.S. prisons for defending 
humanity and the people of Cuba against U.S.-sponsored terrorism. 

These 5 heroes of humanity were sent to investigate activities 
organized by right-wing, anti-Cuban terrorist groups in Miami. These 
groups have committed countless acts of terrorism against the Cuban 
people with full support of the U.S. government - including air plane 
and hotel bombings and the poisoning of livestock and water 
reserves. Their actions have killed over 3500 Cubans.

In 1998, the Cuban 5 were arrested in Miami and charged 
with "conspiracy to commit espionage" and "conspiracy to commit 
murder" among other lesser charges without evidence, simply for 
defending their people against terrorism. On August 20, peace-
loving, justice-loving and humanity-loving people all around the 
world will be demanding freedom for the Cuban 5. In Vancouver, 
please join us in a 24-hour vigil in front of the U.S. Consulate on 
this important day of action to free our 5 Heroes.

El Lunes 20 de Agosto, los 5 Cubanos enfrentarán una nueva batalla 
en su lucha por la justicia mientras empiezan su nueva ronda de 
apelaciones en Atlanta. Por casi 9 años, estos 5 hombres - Antonio 
Guerrero, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez y Gerardo 
Hernandez- han estado prisioneros en cárceles estadounidenses por 
defender la humanidad y al pueblo de Cuba del terrorismo respaldado 
por los EE.UU.

Estos 5 Héroes de la humanidad fueron enviados para investigar 
actividades organizadas por organizaciones derechistas anticubanas 
terroristas en Miami. Estos grupos han cometido incontables actos de 
terrorismo en contra del pueblo Cubano con el respaldo incondicional 
del gobierno de los EE.UU. - incluyendo explosiones de aviones y 
hoteles y el envenenamiento de ganado y reservas de agua. Sus 
acciones han costado la vida a mas de 3500 Cubanos.

En 1998, los 5 Cubanos fueron arrestados en Miami y acusados con 
cargos de "conspiracion para cometer espionaje" y "conspiración para 
cometer asesinato" a su vez de otros cargos menos graves, sin 
evidencia, simplemente por defender a su gente del terrorismo. El 20 
de Agosto, gente pacífica y buscadora de la justicia y la humanidad 
al rededor del mundo estará demandando la liberación de los 5 
Cubanos. En Vancouver, por favor únansenos en una vigilia de 24 
horas frente al consulado de los EE.UU. en este importante dia de 
acción para liberar a nuestros 5 Héroes.
